How to Create a Surround Sound Room with Sonos Arc, Sub, and Era 100 Pro Speakers

🔧 What You’ll Need:

  • 1x Sonos Arc (main soundbar with Dolby Atmos support)
  • 1x Sonos Sub (optional but highly recommended for bass)
  • 2x Sonos Era 100 or Era 300 (for rear surround channels)
  • Sonos app (iOS or Android)
  • Wi-Fi network

Step 1: Place the Sonos Arc

The Sonos Arc is your front soundstage—this replaces your center, left, and right channels.

Placement tips:

  • Center it directly under your TV (wall-mounted or on furniture)
  • Ensure it’s not blocked—especially the upward-firing Dolby Atmos drivers
  • Use the Sonos Arc wall mount if needed

📌 Connect the Arc to your TV using an HDMI eARC port to support Dolby Atmos.

Step 2: Add the Subwoofer

While the Arc has decent bass, the Sonos Sub dramatically improves the experience by handling low frequencies.

Placement tips:

  • Place near the Arc, but not in a tight corner or under heavy furniture
  • It can sit upright or flat on its side
  • Avoid placing it directly behind the Arc

In the Sonos app:

  • Go to Settings > System > Arc > Add Sub
  • Follow the prompts to wirelessly link it

Step 3: Set Up Era 100s as Rear Surrounds

The Era 100 speakers provide rear-channel audio, turning your setup into a 5.1 or Dolby Atmos surround system.

Placement tips:

  • Place one behind and to the left of your main seating area, and one behind to the right
  • Position at ear level when seated, ideally on stands
  • Keep at least 2–3 feet of space between the speaker and the wall for better acoustics

In the Sonos app:

  • Go to Settings > System > Arc > Add Surrounds
  • Select your Era 100s and assign them as left and right surrounds

Era 300s are more immersive for Atmos due to their spatial audio design. If you have them, they’ll provide height effects from the rear too.

Step 4: Tune with Trueplay (iOS Only)

If you have an iPhone or iPad, use Sonos Trueplay Tuning:

  • Go to Settings > System > Arc > Trueplay
  • Follow the instructions to walk around the room with your iPhone
  • The system will automatically optimize EQ for your space

📱 Trueplay is currently only available on iOS. If you don’t have an Apple device, consider borrowing one just for this step—it’s worth it.

Step 5: Test and Fine-Tune

  • Play Dolby Atmos content from streaming platforms (Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+)
  • Use the Sonos app to adjust individual speaker volumes
  • Set night mode or speech enhancement as needed for different content

Final Thoughts

This setup gives you a wireless 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos surround system that’s:

  • Minimal in wiring
  • High-quality in audio
  • Easy to control via app, voice (Alexa/Google), or TV remote

It’s ideal for medium to large rooms and can expand later with more Sonos products.
